This was a great article Jerry and you definitely hit on the major areas that keep us stuck. For me it was I don't know enough - I just don't know enough. I was always researching more and believed I needed more information. Eventually you just have to pull the trigger.
You nailed it about the 'I don't know enough' trap, Bette! I've been stuck in that exact same research loop, always thinking: 'just one more article' will make me ready. It's funny how working with other solopreneurs finally showed me that we all feel this way - yet we usually know more than enough to start. Sometimes we just need to pull that trigger, right?
Thank you for being so honest about your journey - it's comforting to know even experienced professionals go through this. Here's to less researching and more doing!
Great article, Jerry. I've been building my email list for 2.5 years and I've been writing online for four years, so I've got plenty of material. Creating the first product was my stumbling block, but I'm doing it now (I'm halfway through a short course on How to Engage Adults in a Training Session).
And the tech! It does take a while to learn but I'm getting there, bit by bit!
Yes - everyone has to go through this process! Building an email list can be challenging, as you must write a newsletter regularly. Writing a newsletter is a skill that involves lots of learning and mistakes. My first newsletters weren't that good. But the largest challenge was my first product and offer. I even created a course I had never launched. It was no longer relevant due to the platform's algorithm changes.
I am so glad that you are working on your short course. It sounds exciting and is an excellent topic in increasing adult learning demand.
The tech can be scary initially, but I see a primary shift in digital marketing. I used to be obsessed with complicated funnels. But currently, everything is going toward simplicity and genuine connection with your audience, and I love that. I hope it will stay that way.
I have nothing to teach anyone, which is frustrating. Ever since I started writing on Medium I have been trying to figure it out, and I still haven't found it. My email list is slowly growing, so that's a start. Your post is helpful and I will use the information, so than you for sharing.
Are you kidding me, Lawson? You write on Medium, used to be on social security, managed to get out of the shelter, and quickly grew a YouTube channel. Those are valuable life lessons. There are so many things you can talk about and teach people. You need to decide what to teach. I would focus on just one topic. And choose to grow on YouTube as this is a hot topic, and many mature adults want to start their channel.
Lawson, you have plenty of wisdom to share. Just decide on one and go for it!
You were right about building an email list, Marylee. While people can promote their business in other ways, it is sustainable only with an email list and regular newsletter.

Yes! Definitely less research and more action! 😊

I appreciate your comment, Wendy.
I know what you mean about the writing getting better. I look as some of my first articles which at the time I thought were top notch, and I cringe!
The same here, haha. But it's not about perfection—it's about progress.

This is a fabulous, well laid out article, Jerry!! A plan of Action!!
I’ve been saying, “Build your email list,” for years, no - decades. Those who haven’t listened are still struggling.
50+ people should be able to start a healthy list pretty quickly. They’ve got 30 years of connections to draw upon.
Well done!
