doesn’t say loudly enough:

Content builds an audience over time. Direct messages bring clients this week.

If you have no audience yet — or a very small one — content alone will not find you your first paying client. Posting on social media reaches 1-3% of your followers. And any platform can change its algorithm, suspend your account, or disappear entirely overnight. You have no control over any of it.

Direct messages work differently. They land in front of one specific person who has the problem you solve. No algorithm. No competition. No waiting for someone to stumble across your content.

One good direct message to the right person will outperform a hundred social media posts every single time.

This is always your primary channel — regardless of how large your audience grows.

The creators making real money online combine content for reach with direct outreach for conversions. Not one or the other. Both.

The difference between promoting and pestering

Most people over 50 have a deep resistance to anything that feels like selling.

It comes from decades of being on the receiving end of bad sales tactics — pushy phone calls, manipulative pitches, offers that promised everything and delivered nothing.

So when it’s time to tell people about their own offer, they freeze. They don’t want to be that person.

Here’s the reframe that changes everything:

You are not interrupting someone’s day with something they don’t need. You are offering a specific solution to a specific person who has a specific problem right now. That’s not pestering. That’s a service.

If your offer genuinely solves a real problem for a real person — and you validated that on Day 2 — then reaching out is not an imposition. It’s the right thing to do.

The people who need your help cannot find you if you stay silent.

The two channels that work — in order of priority

Channel 1 — Direct messages (primary — works for everyone)

A personal message to someone you already know — or someone who has engaged with your content — who has the problem you solve.

This is your most important channel regardless of where you are in your online journey. No audience required. No following needed. Just one specific message to one specific person.

Works on any platform — LinkedIn, email, Substack, WhatsApp, anywhere you have a real connection with someone.

Channel 2 — Substack (for those with an existing list)

If you have a Substack newsletter, this channel opens up two distinct and powerful tools that most creators never use together — or even know exist separately.

Tool A — Published newsletter

This is the standard Substack post that appears publicly on your profile and is sent to all your subscribers. Use the PAS framework — Problem, Agitation, Solution — to structure it. Open with the specific problem your ideal client is experiencing. Deepen it. Then introduce your offer as the natural, logical conclusion.

This is your public announcement. Anyone can find it. Anyone can share it.

Tool B — Targeted email without publishing

This is where most Substack creators are leaving serious money on the table — because most don’t even know this feature exists.

You can send a private email directly to your subscribers’ inboxes without publishing it as a post on your Substack at all. It doesn’t appear publicly. It doesn’t go to everyone. You can segment your audience — sending different messages to free subscribers, paid subscribers, or specific groups based on their activity.

Why does this matter?

Because your subscribers have already declared an interest in your content. They know you. They trust you. A private targeted email reaches 25-40% of your list directly — compared to 1-3% on social media. And because it feels personal rather than public, it converts at a significantly higher rate than a published post.

Use it for short, specific promotional messages. Offer announcements. Direct asks. Things you want your subscribers to see — without broadcasting to the entire internet.

I wrote a complete step-by-step guide on exactly how to do this — including current screenshots of the Substack dashboard:

How to Send an Email to Substack Subscribers Without Publishing a Post →

If you have a Substack list — even a small one — read that before you write your outreach today.

It will change how you think about communicating with your audience.

What makes a message work

It’s self-sabotage.

When you charge too little, you don’t attract more clients — you attract the wrong ones. People who haggle, demand more than they paid for, and don’t implement what you give them. Meanwhile, serious clients — the ones who would actually value your guidance and get results — look at your price and wonder what’s wrong with your offer.

I know this pattern because I lived it. I started my consulting calls at a price that felt “safe.” And the clients who paid that price treated the sessions accordingly — casually, without urgency, without accountability.

When I raised my prices, the entire dynamic changed. Clients showed up prepared. They implemented between sessions. They got results. And those results became the testimonials that made the next client easier to close.

Price is not just a number. It’s a signal. It tells your client how seriously to take what you’re offering — and how seriously you take yourself.

wrong.

It tells you to build a course. Create a membership. Design a funnel. Launch a product.

All of that is fine — eventually. But it puts the cart before the horse in a way that has derailed more people over 50 than almost anything else I’ve seen.

Here’s the truth: you cannot sell a course to an audience that doesn’t trust you yet. You cannot fill a membership with clients you haven’t spoken to. You cannot build a funnel around an offer you haven’t tested in a real conversation.

But you can sell a single consulting session to someone who has a problem you can solve. Today. Without a website. Without a following. Without anything except clarity about what you offer and who it’s for.

Simple offers do three things that complicated ones don’t:

They’re easy to explain in one sentence, which means people understand immediately whether they need it

They’re easy to say yes to — because the commitment is small and the result is clear

They generate real feedback fast — every session teaches you something that makes your next offer better

Your first offer is not your forever offer. It’s your proof of concept. The thing that gets you your first paying client, your first testimonial, and your first real understanding of what people will pay for.

Build the simple thing first. Scale later.

What your offer actually needs to include

Forget everything you’ve read about complicated offer structures. At this stage, your offer needs exactly four things:

Who it’s for — the specific person you identified on Day 1 and validated on Day 2

What problem it solves — the specific urgent problem that person has right now

What they get — what happens in the session and what they walk away with

How long it takes — a clear timeframe that makes the commitment feel manageable

That’s it. Four things. Nothing else is required to make your first sale.

Below the paywall, you’ll find the exact offer formula I use with my own clients — including a fill-in-the-blank template you can complete in 15 minutes, real examples of simple offers that sell, and the AI prompt that writes your offer description for you.

Tomorrow we'll price it correctly. But first, you need something to price.

Which offer is right for you?

doesn’t.

Research is safe. You can spend days reading about your niche, studying competitors, analyzing markets — and never have to put yourself in front of a real person who might say no.

Validation requires you to say: “I think I can help you with this. Am I right?”

For people who’ve spent decades in professional environments where you only present something when it’s finished and polished — that feels wrong. Premature. Exposed.

But here’s the truth: the discomfort of validation is nothing compared to the cost of building something nobody wants. Months of work. Zero sales. And the devastating conclusion that “nobody wants what I have” — when the real problem was simply that you never asked.

Validating early and acting on real feedback beats waiting for the perfect moment — every single time.

What validation actually tells you

Validation doesn’t tell you whether your offer is perfect.

It tells you three things:

Whether the problem you identified on Day 1 is real and urgent enough that someone would pay to solve it

Whether your skill is perceived as credible and relevant by the people who have that problem

Whether the specific person you identified actually exists and can be reached

That’s it. You’re not asking for permission. You’re not pitching. You’re not selling.

You’re doing a reality check before you invest more time.

If validation confirms your Day 1 work, you build with confidence tomorrow.

If validation reveals a gap, you find out now, when it costs you 15 minutes instead of three days.

Either outcome is a win.

How many people do you need to validate with?

Start with five.

Not fifty. Five specific people who match the person you identified on Day 1 — the specific type of person who has the problem your skill solves.

If you already have an email list — even a small one — that’s even better. Your subscribers already know you and trust you. A simple, honest question sent to your list will reach more of the right people at once and give you richer feedback faster. Use it.

But if you don’t have a list yet, five real conversations are all you need to start.

Five people who actually have the problem.

Where to find them:

Former colleagues who you know are facing the challenge you solve

Substack subscribers who have replied to your newsletters or commented on your posts

LinkedIn connections in the relevant field or life stage

People in your personal network who are going through exactly what you identified on Day 1

Below the paywall, you’ll find the exact validation method I use — including the specific questions that reveal whether someone would genuinely pay, the right way to approach people without feeling salesy, and the AI prompt that helps you identify the right five people to contact today.

Tomorrow we build the offer. But only if today confirms it’s worth building.

THE DAY 2 EXERCISE: Validate with real people

The simple validation method

So I did something radical — I started writing and publishing one article every single day on Medium. Not because I had a plan. Because I needed a way out.

A few months later, I was a 2X top writer in Entrepreneurship and Productivity. And I quit that job.

But here’s what I wish I had known earlier — a method for identifying the one skill most likely to make money first. I discovered it much later from one of the top business coaches. And when I did, I thought: this would have saved me months of wasted effort, wrong turns, and offers that didn’t land.

Because the problem was never the skills. I had plenty. The problem was I couldn’t see which one to use first — and for whom.

Most people over 50 have exactly the same problem. Not too few skills. Too many. And no filter to find the one that pays the fastest.

That’s exactly what today’s exercise solves.

The trap that keeps experienced people broke

Here’s the pattern I see constantly with smart, experienced people over 50 who want to build online income:

They research endlessly. They consume courses, watch YouTube videos, and constantly read posts. They know more about online business than most people who are actually running one.

And then they do nothing. Or they try to do everything at once.

Both kill your chances before you’ve even start.

The online economy rewards simplicity and specificity above everything else. Not the most qualified person. Not the most experienced. The one with the clearest, most specific answer to one question:

“Who do you help, with what problem, and how?”

If you can’t answer that in one sentence, nobody can buy from you. Not because your skills aren’t valuable — but because confusion doesn’t convert.

The worst thing you can do at this stage is try to offer everything you know. It overwhelms you. It overwhelms your potential clients. And it guarantees you make nothing.

Simplicity is the only path. And simplicity starts with one skill, one problem, one person.

The two types of skills that actually pay

Before the exercise, understand that profitable skills come from two places — and most people only consider one:

Type 1 — Professional skills:

Writing.

Teaching.

Consulting.

Negotiating.

Analyzing data.

Building systems.

Managing people

What you built through your career.

These feel obvious — but most people undervalue them because they assume everyone has them.

They don’t.

Type 2 — Life skills:

Foraging

Permaculture

Moving abroad

Natural medicine

Starting over at 50.

Quitting a bad habit.

Going through a divorce.

Managing aging parents.

Recovering from burnout.

Rebuilding after a financial crisis.

Decluttering and organizing the house

These feel the least like skills because nobody paid you to acquire them. But they’re often worth more than professional skills — because the people who need them are desperate, the problems are urgent, and the transformation is deeply personal.

Your profitable skill is somewhere in one or both of these categories.

Below the paywall, you’ll find the exact three-column exercise that identifies it in 20 minutes — including the specific questions that surface skills most people miss, real examples of how ordinary experience becomes sellable expertise, and the AI prompt that speeds up the entire process in under five minutes.

Tomorrow we find out if anyone will actually pay for it.
